Bed bug heat treatment has the highest eradication rate and is one of the most successful ways to remove a bed bug infestation from your home.

Many pest control companies offer bed bug heat treatment as part of their wider pest control services but many like us specialise in bed bug treatment.

What is Bed Bug Heat Treatment?

Bed bug heat treatment is a specialist process which uses heat to kill bed bugs by spreading the heat throughout the room and maintaining the temperature for a sustained period. We use special bed bug heaters which can reach a high temperature very quickly.

Can Bed Bugs Survive the Heat Treatment?

A bed bug infestation isn’t just the bed bugs you see, it is also eggs and nymphs which are young bed bugs which have not yet fully developed. During a heat treatment, we are not just targeting the living adults but the eggs which are hidden away in the nest. If we don’t successfully kill the eggs, then the life cycle is not broken, and the infestation will resurface a few weeks after treatment.

It is possible for bed bugs to survive the heat treatment. When the room is heated to the required temperature and kept there for a few hours, bed bugs will try to move to cooler spots. Cool spots can occur when a room isn’t prepared properly (For info on how to prepare for bed bug heat treatment please read here) If these cold places are left un-treated, the bed bugs can survive by hiding in these colder areas.

A bed bug heat treatment professional will use a specialist thermal imaging technology to look for cold spots during treatment to avoid this from happening. They will also move smaller items to avoid cold spots where the bed bugs can hide. This will reduce the possibility of any bed bugs surviving the treatment.

On occasion, your pest controller may use an insecticide treatment afterwards to ensure any bed bugs which aren’t 100% killed are finished off, but this will depend on the severity of the infestation.

How Long Does Heat Treatment Take?

A heat treatment will usually take around 4-6 hours, but this will vary depending on the property size, the severity of the infestation and the preparation ready for treatment.

Usually, only one heat treatment is required to remove a bed bug infestation, however for severe infestations a second treatment could be necessary.

Bed bugs are excellent at hiding. They can burrow inside your mattress, into gaps behind skirting boards, behind picture frames, in clothing, in carpets, sofas and other soft furnishings. This can make them very difficult to remove.

We must be thorough as a single bed bug or egg left behind will restart the infestation.

We would always allow a full day for treatment; this includes time for setting up the equipment and clearing up afterwards.

How Long After Heat Treatment Do Bed Bugs Die?

Heat treatments kills bed bugs by dehydrating them, once the room has been heated to the correct temperature for a few hours the bed bugs will begin to die. The first signs are that we will see the bed bugs scurrying around trying to escape the heat. After that they will usually turn upside down and die.

How Much Does Heat Treatment cost?

The cost of heat treatment will vary on several factors. These include the size of the property, ease of access to the property, the severity of the infestation and how many rooms are infested.

We can provide free quotations on request often from photographs and a description over the phone. We do however also visit properties to provide quotations for bed bug heat treatment when required.

How do Bed Bug Heaters Work?

We use different types of heaters depending on the type of property being treated. We use diesel and electric heaters and high-powered fans to circulate the heat.

The heat is distributed to the rooms using ducting ensuring it reaches the correct place.
